Written Tributes

Margaret E. Collins, RN

1952 – 2024St. Mary's Medical Center

Margaret gave 38 years to the cardiac care unit. She was the kind of nurse who remembered every patient's name, every family member's worry. She held hands through the hardest nights and celebrated every recovery. Her colleagues say the unit has never been the same without her. We were honored to conduct her Last Shift Ceremony in the presence of her family and the nurses she mentored.

James R. Whitfield, RN

1965 – 2025Veterans Affairs Medical Center

James served his country twice — first as a combat medic, then as a VA nurse for 31 years. He understood suffering in a way few people do, and he met it with steadiness and grace. His patients called him 'the one who stayed.' We were privileged to honor him with the ceremony his service demanded.

Dorothy A. Reyes, LPN

1970 – 2025Sunrise Long-Term Care

Dorothy spent 27 years caring for elderly residents who had no one else. She learned their stories, their preferences, their fears. She sang to them. She sat with them at the end. She was, to many of them, the last kind face they ever saw. Her Last Shift Ceremony was attended by residents, staff, and the community she had quietly served for nearly three decades.
